Gas Stations have split opening times – 7am – 12.30pm and 3.30pm to 7pm. There are, however, 24-hour gas stations along the Autostrada/Highways – most either open 24-hours or have, at the very least, extended opening hours. The majority of gas stations in Italy are closed on Sundays. Do not worry though, most Gas Stations, when closed, offer a self-service option.
If you’re wanting to use either your credit or debit card at the self-service stations then it is recommended to inform your card issuer that you will be travelling abroad, this will prevent their anti-fraud department from placing a stop on your card for being used in unfamiliar locations.
- Always check your rental car carefully – or ask your car rental agency when you collect the car – to ensure you know the correct type of fuel it requires.
In the event you use the wrong fuel, do not try starting the vehicle, as this will most likely cause severe damages – to which you will be fully liable for all repair costs. If you inform the staff at the gas station they will be able to arrange for the tank to be drained. Then you can refill safely with the correct fuel type.
Unleaded Gas is approximately US$4.00 per gallon.
